Fear of giving.

We fear creating because we don’t like change and creating by its very nature, produces change.

We also fear creating because if we create then that means we are giving something of ourselves over for free. We may get paid but really it’s free because our work doesn’t always mean others will be vulnerable in return.

It’s a gift and that is all. A gift for the sake of being able to give. Continue reading

Porn: How the Church needs to opt in.

A week after David Cameron’s announcement that he would be tackling internet porn by ensuring that all new internet users would have to effectively choose to be able to view porn online; it is fair to say that responses have been mixed.

On the face of it it’s good news for parents all over the UK who are concerned about what their kids are viewing online. Parents can now choose to block all porn sites and relax knowing that their kids will not be able to view porn.

Kids viewing porn is never a good thing. It can lead to years of shame and self esteem issues if let to spiral out of control into their teenage and then adult years. It’s is easier than ever to view porn and if you care at all about what your kids are looking at then you shouldn’t let the internet babysit your kids. Continue reading

Who is your art not for?

There will be those who don’t get it. Who will laugh at, try to sabotage and get in the way of what you are doing.

You may then spend much of your time trying to win them round because you want everyone to agree with you. This is impossible. They just want you to fail. They are maybe jealous or angry. Let them be. Because you will waste your art and time trying to achieve the impossible. Continue reading

Opinions.

We place so much emphasis on what others think of us. We think people don’t talk to us because of something inherently wrong with us. But really there is more going on.

When we enter a room we can either decide to enter into the potential conversations or we can hold back and protect ourselves from saying something stupid or not knowing what to say.

It’s easier to hold back for some people. I am one of them. But when I do hold back, I find people are less likely to talk to me. I wait for someone else to make the first move, to start the conversation or to initiate including me.

And often it never comes. Continue reading

When worship music sucks

Music is food for the soul. That’s what they say isn’t it? Yet I can come out of church and feel more hungry than ever.

I’ve always had a love hate relationship with worship and music in church. I own albums by some of the most well know worship acts around today, but more often than not this type of music is missing something for me. There is an easiness to it that I don’t find sits well with me. Worship music has become music by numbers. We try and write songs that could easily sound as if they are Coldplay and Snow Patrol songs. Which is alright unless you aren’t a fan of those bands.

Then you might as well be outside. Continue reading

The Plank in the Church’s Eye.

Like most guys my age my first exposure to pictures of scantily clad women was through magazines like FHM and Loaded. Without a doubt these magazines are what started me off down the road of porn.

They gave me a taste and I wanted more so I went looking and I found it. There are other more important reasons why of course,  including issues with not having a Father after I turned 11 and low self esteem. Magazines like these gave me an outlay sure but I can’t put the blame entirely at their feet.

The news on Monday that the owner’s of Loaded had gone into administration will probably be greeted with relief and victory by some. Not me. Continue reading

Jesus V Superman

A new Superman movie has just come out. Which means one thing. Pastors everywhere are prepping sermons full of Superman references.

If you hear any of these examples used in a sermon this weekend then congratulations, your Pastor is truly competent at taking culture and stretching anything so it is about Jesus. We love using popular culture as the go to topic when we can’t think of an actual sermon to preach (or blog to write about).

So here’s a small checklist to see how late your Pastor left his sermon preparation this week.

Both Jesus and Superman…. Continue reading
